"A heartfelt, personal story of the gradual awakening of a woman who comes to see that preferring the 'human to the perfect' does not alienate her from authentic spirituality but allows her to live more fully."

Blog #2 Tribute to Christopher Hitchens

Christopher Hitchens was one of the first to write about the darker side of Mother Teresa.  One of the things I admired most about Hitchens was that, in the light of new evidence, he allowed himself to change his mind.  Though Hitchens' book Mother Teresa: The Missionary Position claimed that Mother Teresa was a fraud, when Hitchens read Mother Teresa's letters, he revised his opinion about her.

Hi Mary,

Did Hitch write about his revised opinion of MT or did you hear him speak of it?

Hitchens wrote a very perceptive article for Newsweek after the publication of Mother Teresa's letter in 2007.

Among other things, Hitchens said, "The case of Mother Teresa, who could not force herself into accepting the facile cure-all of 'faith,' is that of a fairly simple woman struggling to be honest with herself, while also—this is important—striving to be an example to others." This revision of his previous description of her as a fraud reflects Hitchens' willingness to look at new evidence and rethink his positions--as he did so often in life. I admire him for that.

The entire article is well worth a read, and is reproduced on Richard Dawkins' website. http://richarddawkins.net/articles/1582-teresa-bright-and-dark

You can also hear Hitchens rethink his opinions on YouTube. Here he talks about how the Church has used Mother Teresa: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0oZzE5oZGo

Glenn Greenwald wrote a very interesting article on the protocol for deaths of public figures. He starts by talking about the way Reagan was covered after his death, then makes some very interesting points about Hitchens. True, Hitchens wasn't perfect, and his attitude towards the Iraq war seems particularly reprehensible.
